What is a Magnetic Separator?

Working Principle

1. Dry Magnetic Separator

  • Bulk materials are fed onto a conveyor belt or drum.

  • Magnets or electromagnets generate a strong field that attracts magnetic particles.

  • Magnetic particles adhere to the magnet surface, move along with the drum, and are discharged separately.

  • Non-magnetic materials continue through the line.

2. Wet Magnetic Separator

  • Slurry feeding: Slurry enters the separation tank from the feeding box.

  • Loosening: Water jets dilute the slurry, improving particle mobility.

  • Magnetic capture: Magnetic particles are attracted to the drum, forming chains that shed non-magnetic contaminants.

  • Discharge: Magnetic products are collected in the concentrate tank, while non-magnetic or weakly magnetic particles are discharged through an outlet.

Two common designs:

  • Counter-current type: Feed direction opposite to drum rotation. High recovery rate, suitable for fine particles (0–0.6 mm).

  • Concurrent type: Feed direction same as drum rotation. Magnetic particles are collected at the edge of the weak magnetic field, ideal for coarse or strongly magnetic fine particles.
